What families have to say?

Natalie S.
Worldchool mom of 3 kids

We worldschool and travel with our 3 kids from 4-7 yo. The children saw the Nutcracker Ballet live in 4 different countries, they can discuss its performance by different famous companies. We were curious for some new activities (from this unit study), ideas, as children love it a lot, among other Tchaikovsky ballets. Thank you.

My daughter became interested in the Nutcracker through "Barbie and the Nutcracker" DVD. I explored this unit study to go a little deeper and build up to seeing a live performance next year with her. Thank you Sonia for the Nutcracker Unit Study. We’ve been working our way through everything. We found lovely Nutcracker cake decorations just before Christmas and put them in my daughter’s stocking. Perfect fit to one of the activity.

We had tickets to see the Nutcracker mid December and this unit study was a great way to get excited and learn about it! The cheat sheet was so helpful too.

We are very familiar with the Nutcracker. It's our family tradition to see it on stage before Christmas. My younger daughter also dances at a classical ballet company that puts on the Nutcracker every year. This unit study has some great crafts and activities to incorporate the Nutcracker into our day while we look forward to see it on stage.

We were excited to be adding this to our Homeschool studies for my 12 years old daughter.

We made Rice Crispie treats with crushed candy canes on top and took them to the Nutcracker performance with us! It was inspired by one section mentioning the Land of sweets of the unit study. They were delicious and the performance was wonderful, & the kids were as sweet as sugar plums. Sonia had put great activities on this unit study to explore the Nutcracker more in depth.

Fantastic cheat sheet and unit study! Thanks Sonia. I got 2 cute knitted dolls for my kiddos - Nutcracker and Clara. They've been great for telling the story and for my kids acting out the story, as prompted in the study. We brought them along to the show so my daughter had something to hold on to and fidget with - great tip from the cheat sheet!

I have been reading the pdfs and got many ideas from it. Thank you Sonia very much for making this with such joy!

About me

Hi, I'm Sonia, a homeschooling mother of 2 children (12 and 15 years old), writer, Founder and Director of a Transformed Mother.

In 2014, and for several years thereafter, I embarked on a journey to assist families using music and thematic approaches - using the multiple intelligences concept. My goal was to empower children, like yours, to discover and express their innate abilities and talents through enjoyable and educational activities and tools. As time went on, I expanded my activities to include teaching emotional intelligence, aiding children in finding balance, boosting their confidence, and supporting their overall development for a thriving and blossoming future.

Today, my focus has shifted more towards assisting mothers in transforming their parenting experiences. My aim is to help mothers experience more joy, enhance their confidence, reduce feelings of overwhelm and frustration in parenting, and ultimately, to have more harmonious family quality time.

A happier and more balanced mother can raise a happier child! And I'm here to support and guide you.

Let's create more magic memories for this Holiday season!

What is in the bundle?

In the bundle, you'll access 10 days of activities with the Nutcracker unit study. You'll receive printables to create your lapbook, covering key story parts and exploring musical pieces and instruments. The Cheat Sheet includes a 16-page story breakdown, activity suggestions for before, during, and after the show (live or online), and bonus colouring pages – everything you need to enjoy the magic of the Nutcracker Ballet.

Which age are the Nutcracker Unit study & Lapbook for?

This unit study is suitable for children from 2 to 12 years old. You can always adapt and adjust the activities to make them more engaging or complex for your children. The lapbook is more suitable for children from 4 to 12 years old.

Which Format is it delivered IN?

The bundle comes with pdf files to download. You'll decide if you want to print them or just read them from your device.

How many activities are there?

The unit study breaks down the story into 10 days of activities, allowing you to follow them at your own pace. Each day includes a variety of activities covering subjects such as math, language arts, arts, music, and social & health... Additionally, the Lapbook is an added folder that enhances interactivity, offering elements of the story to be cut, drawn, coloured, and written.

Which topics are covered?

The unit study covers various maths concepts, language arts activities, arts & music, and social & health. The lapbook is highlighting the main parts of the story and the musical instruments. For instance, when the Nutcracker and Clara reach the Land of Sweets, there are a lot of components about the countries, the culture, the food - baking or tasting experiences, sensory discovery, exploring the map, learning new words in different languages...

Do you need to attend a live show to work on the unit study or the Lapbook?

The unit study provides links to online videos and music of the ballet, along with additional shared resources. So you could decide to only use the resources. You don't need to attend a live ballet show, although it can be a wonderful experience and maybe a new tradition, as my kids and I have made it for several years in a row.

Are there any religious activities mentioned?

The Nutcracker ballet is not religious; it tells a fantasy story centered around a young girl's dream and magical adventures. While it's associated with the Christmas time, it lacks a religious narrative and focuses on the holiday's enchantment, gathering and festivities.

Do you need to purchase any materials to cover the unit study?

Most of the materials suggested for the activities are commonly found in most households, such as cooking/baking items and kitchen wares, basic craft items like craft papers, paint and brushes, glue, scissors, pipe cleaners, tapes, crayons, markers, pom poms, craft sticks... If you and your children are enthusiastic about the story and ballet, you have the option to purchase books, CDs, movies to further enhance your activities, as we did in our family. If you have access to a library, you could borrow books, CDs and DVDs too.

Do you need to do all the activities?

You have the flexibility to pick and choose the activities that are most relevant and enjoyable for your family. As long as everyone is savouring the magic of the story and feeling creative, you're good to go.
